Four U.S. marines drowned when their tank fell off a bridge and plunged into a canal west of Baghdad, the military said Friday.

The military said it was an accident and not the result of enemy action.

The marines were travelling in a U.S. M1A1 Main Battle Tank at the time of the incident near Karmah, 80 kilometres west of Baghdad. But the military would not say what kind of operation the marines were undertaking.

The accident is under investigation.

In another incident, three U.S. soldiers were killed Thursday when roadside bombs hit two U.S. convoys southwest of Baghdad, the military said.
