Edmonton police say they're ready to crack down on any fans who become unruly after Sunday night's hockey playoff between the Oilers and the San Jose Sharks.

FROM MAY 13, 2006: Hockey fans stabbed in Edmonton melee

After the Oilers beat the Sharks in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal in Edmonton on Friday night, thousands of hockey fans poured out of the arena and into the city's Whyte Avenue bar district to celebrate.

Late in the evening, the crowd got rough. Two men were sent to hospital with knife wounds and the riot squad arrested nearly 50 people.

But Insp. Jamie Ewatski said the force is ready for the aftermath of Game 5 and won't allow a repeat of Friday's violence.

"Our command structure will have a solid plan put into place with resources on how we're going to deal with this," he said.

The game is in San Jose, which may keep people at home in Edmonton, Ewatski said.

There were about 150 officers on patrol for Friday's game. Ewatski wouldn't say how many would be on duty Sunday.

The Oilers tied the best-of-seven series at two games each with Friday's win.

CBC will broadcast Sunday's game at 10 p.m. EDT.
