Funeral held for Sault Ste. Marie officer who died on duty

Hundreds of police officers have gathered in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to honour a fellow officer who died while on duty.

FROM MAY 14, 2006: Sault Ste. Marie police officer dies in auto accident

Police from across Ontario, other provinces and the United States formed ranks at a city arena Thursday before marching to a nearby armoury for the funeral of police Const. Donald Doucet.

Doucet, 41, died early Sunday morning when the patrol car in which he was riding was in collision with a minivan.

A 29-year-old woman has been charged with several impaired driving offences. She was injured in the accident, along with the driver of the police car.

Premier Dalton McGuinty and Lt.-Gov. James Bartleman are among the dignitaries atttending Doucet's funeral.

Police from Sudbury, North Bay and the Ontario Provincial Police have volunteered to patrol Sault Ste. Marie for the duration of the funeral so the entire Sault police force can attend.
