An evacuation alert, sparked by overflowing rivers, remained in place Sunday for more than 400 homes in Passmore and Slocan Park, communities in British Columbia's West Kootenay area.

About 50 homes in Passmore had to be evacuated on Saturday after the Slocan River breached its banks.

Evacuees were staying at the Passmore Community Hall or with friends and family.

Lara Perzoff, a spokeswoman with the Regional District of Central Kootenay, said there was no rain overnight but crews were watching the cloudy skies.

Officials were worried that more rain, in the forecast for Sunday night and Monday, would exacerbate the problem of fast-melting snow feeding rising rivers.

Higher-than-normal temperatures in the southern B.C. Interior means the "snowpack is coming off almost all at once," provincial Environment Minister Barry Penner said.

His ministry issued a flood watch last Thursday for much of the southern Interior, covering the West Kootenay and East Kootenay, Boundary, Columbia, Okanagan and South Thompson regions.
