Emergency rescue crews are searching for three people who are missing after their boat overturned in stormy conditions Sunday on a lake northeast of Toronto.

The pleasure craft was carrying seven people when it overturned at around 4:30 p.m. on Rice Lake, about 100 kilometres from Toronto, said Ontario Provincial Police Staff Sgt. Scott McRae.

Four people reached the shore, but three others are still missing.

The boat has been found, upside down and partially submerged, in an area that had reported wind gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour and heavy waves.

A search-and-rescue team and helicopters from the provincial police and nearby Canadian Forces Base Trenton are assisting in the search.

Rice Lake is a large and relatively shallow body of water that is popular with recreational boaters and fishermen.
