Vancouver police are searching for a 12-year-old girl who is missing on the city's Downtown Eastside. They said they are treating the matter as a missing person case because there is no evidence of abduction.

Police say Kelsey had stepped out for some air when she disappeared.

About 70 police have been looking for a girl tentatively identified as Kelsey Janiver of Kelowna after she went for a walk about six o'clock Saturday evening and failed to return.

She was staying at a motel in the area with her father. He called police when she didn't come back.

Police say they have little to go on, but are hopeful the local population will help.

Although the Downtown Eastside is a rough area known for drugs and violence, even people who live on the street have a lot of sympathy for families and kids, Const. Tim Fanning said.

"They work well with us, especially in a situation like this," he said. "This is a real community that will pull together and try and find Kelsey."

Police describe Kelsey as being five feet tall with brown hair. They believe she was wearing a white t-shirt, black pants, a brown hoodie with silver lettering and running shoes.
