NEW YORK (NCAA) - The 65-team NCAA Tournament field could be expanded by up to 15 teams under plans being considered by the incoming chairman of the overseeing committee, Gary Walters.

After meeting with a number of coaches, including long-time campaigner Jim Boeheim of Syracuse last week, Walters is considering a range of proposals which would see between three and 15 teams added. Walters is due to take over chairmanship of the committee in September, but expects to see action before then, with discussions on the matter likely at the next round of meetings from June 26-30 in Orlando.

"We're going to have a serious discussion, and then we'll make some decision about where to proceed from there," he told USA Today. "What we have right now is working pretty well. There's no outcry there," Walters said.

"(But) I don't know that we should be influenced by whether there's an outcry or there isn't. What we should do is act in what's in the best interests of the game as stewards of the game."
