LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A power outage knocked out radar and forced a halt to all incoming and outgoing flight in the Los Angeles, California, area Tuesday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Some of the high-altitude radar-monitoring systems in Palmdale, California, were up again, and authorities were working to bring the rest online, FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said.

The radar center handles flights 18,000 feet and higher.

The Palmdale center handles traffic around seven airports in California and others in Utah, Nevada and Arizona, Brown said.

The cause of the outage was unknown, Brown said.

Some of the air traffic in the area -- which includes Los Angeles International Airport, Burbank Airport, San Diego International Airport and John Wayne Airport in Orange County -- was being transferred to other area centers, including Albuquerque and Oakland, she said.
