(CNN) -- Two people died and at least two others were injured in shootings Thursday at three locations in Essex, Vermont, including an elementary school, police said.
The suspect was apprehended by police and taken to a local hospital for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
"We have a suspect in custody. The suspect has identified himself as the only shooter. He is secure," Police Chief David Demag told The Associated Press.
The shooter first killed someone at a home before going to Essex Elementary School, where he fatally shot another, the chief said, according to the AP. The shooter then went to a second home where he wounded a person and turned the gun on himself, Demag told the AP.
The incident began with a domestic dispute, police said.
Essex is located 100 miles (165 kilometers) south of Montreal, Canada. It lies just across the New York-Vermont border from New York's Adirondack Park.
The AP, citing police, reported that a teacher preparing for classes, which begin next week, was shot at the school. A second shooting was reported at a nearby greenhouse business, according to the AP.
There were no children at the school, WCAX reported.
