Hundreds of skate enthusiasts gathered at the end of August to watch a major church-backed skate and rollerblading event as the church relished the opportunity to reach out with the gospel to young people on their own turf.
The conditions were ripe at the skate park in Nailsea for a good show as the bright sunny weather enabled the 30 competitors to show off the best of what they could do in no less than five categories.
The event was joint run by Holy Trinity and Trendlewood Churches together with Christian Surfers UK, and most of the congregations, both young and old, mucked in to make sure the event was a great success.
The event was rounded off by live entertainment from local Nailsea group “The Perrings” and South African singer songwriter Liselle.
Meanwhile, well known Bristol DJ, Kubiks, set the right atmosphere for the skaters to let loose on the park.
Contest organiser Phil Williams, head of Christian Surfers UK and a member of Holy Trinity Church said, “It was once again great to see Nailsea’s youngsters show their talents on the skateboards and rollerblades.
“For many this was their first contest and it was a real encouragement for them to have such a good crowd cheering them on.
“It’s great to see the youngster’s of Nailsea and surrounding area in such a positive light and the whole event had a real community atmosphere.
“Each year the event seems to grow in size and the skill level of the competitors just gets better.”
Many of the young competitors had taken part in Love Bristol, a major church-supported event which saw 1000 young volunteers take part in community action projects over five days to bring love and care back to the city.
Some of the competitors had become Christian during Love Bristol before taking part in the Christian Surfers skate event, something which answered the prayers of the local church team.
