Episode of TV Series for Kids Shot at Lake Mead

Terri and Bindi Irwin, the wife and daughter of the late Steve Irwin, famous worldwide as “The Crocodile Hunter,” visited the park on Thursday, August 30th, as part of a five-park trip for their television show, which runs on the Discovery Channel and on Animal Planet.  Kay Rohde, chief of interpretation, took the group for a raft trip in the Black Canyon. The trip began at the base of Hoover Dam and ended 13 miles down the Colorado River at Willow Beach. Along the way, Rohde educated  the Irwins about the rich history of the area, and included talks on geology, plants, animals, and cultural resources.

“We were excited to be one of the parks chosen for their television series for children,” said superintendent Bill Dickinson. “The goal of the show is to get children of all ages to care about the environment and to be good stewards in special places all over the world.  We are trying to get this generation of students excited about nature and back into National Parks.  Partnering with the Irwins, the Australian Zoo, and our concessioner Forever Resorts for this visit and taping is an excellent way to reach this target audience of young students.”

The show is set to air in early 2008.

Out there on the playa, away from the arcing grid of cars, tents, motor homes, DJs and most of 2007’s denizens of Black Rock City, lies a kind of faerie wasteland of art — a combination of brutal temperatures, alkali dust and images.
