National Fire Activity - Preparedness Level 5 - Sept 6th Report

National Preparedness Level 4 (On a scale from 1 to 5)

September 6, 2007

Hot and dry weather conditions in southern California caused many of the large fires to burn actively yesterday. Rain was reported on most of the large fires in Idaho. Overall, firefighters in Idaho and Montana continue to make good progress toward containment goals.

Weather Discussion: Offshore winds in northern California are expected to continue through the weekend. Offshore flow will continue today in northern California with gusty winds and poor overnight relative humidity recovery. Offshore winds will progress north into Oregon by the weekend. Portions of the Southeast will continue to see very warm temperatures and low relative humidity.

Moonlight (Plumas National Forest): 19,500 acres at five percent contained. This fire is eight miles northeast of Greenville. Extreme fire behavior with crowning and long-range spotting was reported. Structures and historical sites are threatened. Evacuations are in effect.

Lazy (Shasta Trinity National Forest): 550 acres at 45 percent contained. This fire is located 24 miles northeast of Covelo. Moderate fire behavior was reported.

Yolla Bolly Complex (Mendocino National Forest): 140 acres at 85 percent contained. This fire is 15 miles northeast of Covelo. Moderate fire behavior was reported.
North (Angeles National Forest): 2,100 acres at 60 percent contained. This fire is located seven miles southwest of Acton. Structures, transportation and utility infrastructure, and recreational areas are threatened.

Grouse (Sequoia National Forest): 1,022 acres at 50 percent contained. This fire is 36 miles northeast of Porterville. Minimal fire activity was reported.

NEW FDB (Florida Department of Forestry): 500 acres at zero percent contained. This fire is 24 miles northwest of Pembroke Pines, burning in southern rough. Active, wind-driven fire behavior was reported.

Grays Creek (Payette National Forest): 24,413 acres at 55 percent contained. This fire is burning 13 miles south of Council. Minimal fire behavior continued yesterday. Area closures and evacuations are in order. Rain fell over the fire yesterday.

Chief Parrish (Southwest Area Office, Idaho Department of Lands): 2,790 acres at 40 percent contained. This fire is burning one mile south of Banks. Torching and crowning fire behavior was reported. Banks is currently threatened. Highway 55 restrictions and area closures are in effect.

Rose Creek (Boise District, Bureau of Land Management): 300 acres at 50 percent contained. This fire is 31 miles south of Murphy. No new information was provided.
Middle Mountain (Twin Falls District, Bureau of Land Management): 2,300 acres at 99 percent contained. This fire is burning five miles south of Oakley. Precipitation fell on the fire yesterday.
Confluence Complex (Salmon-Challis National Forest):40,134 acres at an unknown percent contained. These three fires are located 28 miles southwest of North Fork. Minimal fire behavior was reported. Structures are threatened and areas near the fire are closed. Rain fell over the fire yesterday.

Bridge (Clearwater National Forest): 42,250 acres at zero percent contained. This complex of two fires is 45 miles southwest of Missoula. Creeping and smoldering were observed.

Rattlesnake (Nez Perce National Forest): 98,500 acres at 25 percent contained. This fire is 25 miles south of Elk City. Minimal fire activity was reported. Rain fell over the area yesterday.

Cascade Complex (Boise National Forest): 278,334 acres at 30 percent contained. This complex of two fires is 16 miles northeast of Cascade. Structures, power lines, cultural sites, and historical cabins remain threatened. Evacuations and road closures are in effect. Rain fell over the fire yesterday.

East Zone Complex (Payette National Forest): 246,150 acres at an unknown percent contained. This complex is made up of two fires, 25 miles northeast of McCall. Structures remain threatened. Road closures are in effect. Minimal fire behavior was reported.

Shower Bath Complex (Salmon-Challis National Forest): 120,052 acres at an unknown percent contained. These two fires are located 18 miles northwest of Challis. Fire activity was minimal. Structures remain threatened. Scattered precipitation was observed on the fire.

Krassel Complex (Payette National Forest): 64,300 acres. This Wildland Fire Use (WFU) complex is being managed to accomplish natural resource objectives. It is located four fires is 44 miles northeast of Yellow Pine. Minimal fire behavior was observed.
