National Park Service Remembers Sept. 11, 2001
Today, on the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Bush has directed that flags be flown at half staff and that the day be remembered with appropriate ceremonies, activities and remembrance services - including a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. EDT.
National Park Service law enforcement, emergency services and other employees were among the first to respond to the attacks, including rangers from Fire Island and the Statue of Liberty, Park Police officers from the Washington and New York offices, and personnel from Federal Hall to Golden Gate. The Service has a web site dedicated to that response and to the impacts of the attack on the agency. If you haven’t yet looked at it, you can find it at http://www.nps.gov/remembrance/ .
The agency has also prepared a detailed, in-depth report on same subject. The report, entitled “Responding to the September 11 Terrorist Attacks” and prepared by Janet A. McDonnell, is available in a PDF file at http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/mcdonnell/911.pdf
