Volunteers Needed for Carrizo National Public Lands Day Projects

Members of the public interested in improving conditions on public lands are invited to take part in projects on the Carrizo Plain National Monument on Sept. 29, National Public Lands Day.

“Anyone who wants to help us make Carrizo a better place is welcome to join us,” said Johna Hurl, Bureau of Land Management monument manager.

Participants will meet at the Goodwin Education Center at 9 a.m. and then caravan to the El Saucito Ranch House.

Projects planned include finishing an interpretive trail, cleaning up the historic homestead and doing a general clean-up. Friends of the Carrizo and the Carrisa Plains 4-H Club will provide lunch. Speakers at lunch will provide their first-hand experiences on the historic site.

“The weather may be hot or cold or in between.  The ground is uneven in places and there is a hill.  The work will involve lifting, bending, walking and other tasks according to your ability. Please bring sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, boots or other sturdy footwear, sunscreen (SP15+), work gloves and plenty of water,” Hurl said.

National Public Lands Day is the largest annual coast-to-coast, single-day volunteer restoration effort for America’s public lands. The purpose of this event is to improve the recreational facilities, preserve the biological and heritage resources, and foster public involvement in the stewardship of public lands.
