Zion NP Free Firewood Permits for Lava Point Terminated Early
The last day for free firewood permits for the Lava Point area in Zion National Park was on Wednesday, October 10. The park had hoped to have enough firewood available for the public through October 14, but demand was higher than expected and the supply of easily accessible wood is now exhausted.
Most of the firewood that the public was able to collect was from a thinning operation that the park conducted over the last few years to reduce the wildland fire threat to Lava Point and the surrounding area and for the restoration of native aspen stands. The remaining debris from the firewood collection area will be piled and burned on site by Zion fire management personnel this winter when weather and safe burning conditions allow.
The park would like to thank the public for their understanding and cooperation in making the Lava Point firewood collection project a success. From October 1 through October 8 the park had issued over 80 permits and had given away approximately 220 cords of wood.
