BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Indiana University will hire Marquette’s Tom Crean as its basketball coach, according to a university trustee who confirmed the hiring Tuesday.
The trustee, Philip Eskew, said Crean had signed a letter of intent with the university and was meeting with Indiana’s players Tuesday night.
The hiring comes near the end of a tumultuous six-week period in which the former Hooisers coach Kelvin Sampson, who resigned after the release of an N.C.A.A. report that said he committed major recruiting violations. Dan Dakich replaced Sampson and the Hoosiers lost four of their final seven games.
Dakich suspended guard Jamarcus Ellis for disciplinary reasons for the final regular-season game, at Penn State. He announced Tuesday that Ellis and guard Armon Bassett had been kicked off the team for missing two scheduled events.
Crean led Marquette to the Final Four in 2003. It is unclear what kind of a lineup he will inherit.
The starting forwards D. J. White and Lance Stemler were seniors, and Bassett and Ellis may not be invited back. The Hoosiers’ fifth starter, the freshman Eric Gordon, is expected to announce Monday whether he will enter the N.B.A. draft.
